If you were locked into an inescapable room with someone you cared about with a gun, no food, no water and one choice, would you choose yourself or the other person to die? That’s the choice the victims in the first Helen Grace novel by M.J. Arlidge.
When the deed is done a door mysteriously opens and the survivor is released – dirty, dehydrated, starving and shattered – but alive. DI Grace cannot press murder charges on the remaining victim but neither can she find the real murderer. Slowly it becomes apparent all those kidnapped have a past relationship with DI Grace herself. How could she stop this serial killer who always seems to be one step ahead of her.
M.J. Arlidge has given the reader a real thriller, as advertised. He takes the normal crime thriller and turns it slightly askew with a main character that is flawed. Helen Grace is full of secrets and dealing with her own demons in her own unconventional way. She sometimes skirts the limits of the law yet respects the honor of her badge. The writing moves the story along quickly, so this was a quick two day read for me.
I’m always complaining about not wanting to get involved in yet another series but when I read a review of another of Alridge’s books by a fellow Booklikes blogger I wanted to see what the buzz was about. I’m glad I started with the first one Helen Grace is a novel character and I like her (despite her obvious flaws) and I think this is a series I’m going to enjoy.
